Freeway Takeovers: The Reemergence of the Collective through Urban Disruption

san-diego-5-freeway-protest Freeway protests on Highway 5 near La Jolla, CA circa Dec 2014

[Editor’s Note: Last night citizens in Chicago shut down Lake Shore Drive in protest over the Staten Island grand jury’s refusal to indict the police officer responsible for the choking death of Eric Garner. Yet in SoCal, protesters have been using the freeways as a vehicle for protest and political awareness for decades. UCSD PhD candidates Troy Araiza Kokinis and Jael Vizcarra explain the goals, meaning and context of these protests and others like them.]

Driving along the Interstate 5 in Southern California makes commuters privy to the militarization of port cities like San Diego. It is not unusual to encounter a tank headed to Camp Pendleton or a truck filled with “1.4 Explosives.” These sightings normalize the spatial coexistence of daily life with technologies of destruction. These quotidian reminders along the freeway belie the laid…

Dutch baby

Chef in disguise

Dutch baby chef in disguise

My son loves pancakes! If it was up to him we will have them every morning! and although I do have quite a few pancake recipes ranging from vegan pancakes to carrot cake pancakes and Arabic Atayef pancakes, I am always on the look out for new and interesting pancake recipes.  Dutch baby pancakes have been on my list of recipes to try for quite some time.

Dutch baby pancakes, sometimes called a German pancakes, or a Dutch puff, are  sweet baked pancakes that are very similar to a popovers. They are derived from the German pfannkuchen and they are made with eggs, flour, sugar and milk, and usually seasoned with vanilla and cinnamon. Fabio Viviani’s Red Wine Bolognese Sauce

Fresh & Foodie

Fabio Viviani Red Wine Bolognese from freshandfoodie.com @freshandfoodieYou may remember him as “Top Scallop” (I know I do), but Top Chef’s Fabio Viviani is much more than the charming, handsome Italian chef you remember from television. If you’re a Chicagoan, you know him as one of the guys behind Siena Tavern. And now, thanks to his new wine collection available exclusively at Chicagoland grocer Mariano’s, you can also know him as the guy that gets you drunk. (But don’t worry, non-Chicagoans — distribution will be expanded nationally in 2015.)

I had the pleasure of meeting Fabio a few weeks ago at the release party for his new wine collection at the Mariano’s store in Chicago’s West Loop. He discussed the inspiration behind his wine collection, its availability at Mariano’s stores, and the fact that he can never resist taking a selfie.

I took that as an invitation. Pretty good, huh?

Fabio Viviani from freshandfoodie.com @freshandfoodie

The collection currently includes a 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon…

After the recent announcement of the release dates of Marvel’s Phase 3 films, which includes Cap 3 to Avengers: Infinity War and everything in between, it’s no surprise that the MCU has started to reveal more information about the forthcoming films. Doctor Strange is the 2nd film on the Phase 3 schedule and will be directed by Scott Derrickson, written by Jon Spaihts and produced by (the infallible) Kevin Feige. According to Marvel.com, “The film…will follow the story of neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a horrific car accident, discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions.”

Cue the angst, Benny feels and a sharp looking goatee.

There has been chatter on the interwebs condemning the fact that Benedict Cumberbatch, an Anglo Brit, has…
